The two last London Symphonies (together with Symphony 102) form a cycle of works intended for performance at an alternative venue in the King’s Theatre which opened in 1795. In both symphonies Haydn exploits very innovative instrumentation; as for example in the clarinet parts – please take note how beautifully these instruments are exploited in the Trio of Symphony No.103 (E flat major). In the same symphony, subtitled the Drumroll, the timpani, for the first time in history is treated as an independent solo instrument.
