Grazyna Bacewicz was born to a Polish-Lithuanian family with musical traditions. Her first lessons on the violin and piano came from her father, Wincenty Bacewicz (Vincas Bacevicius). She continued her musical education at the Helena Kijenska-Dobkiewiczowa Conservatory in Lódz. From Lódz the family moved to Warsaw, and in 1924 the young artist began to study at the Conservatory there. She studied composition, violin and piano playing under the care of professors such as Kazimierz Sikorski, Józef Turczynski and Józef Jarzebski.
