It is the sixteen-year old Schubert (1797-1828) who looks at us from the pencil portrait by Leopold Kupelweiser. It was the time of his life when he met the one-year younger Theresa Grob, a musical daughter of a merchant from Lichtenthal. The composer dedicated to her the song Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), along with a number of his other early songs and the soprano part of the Mass in F major, composed for the centennial of the local church. The hidden affection lasted three years. “I loved and I was loved back”, he confided to his friend in 1821. “I hoped for three years to marry her but I couldn’t find a job that would provide for both of us. According to the will of her parents, she married another man, which has hurt me very much.
