The events of World War II stand behind these two works, brought somewhat closer together in that the nationality of both composers was French. Whereas in one instance the international fame of the symphonic composer ensured a ready acceptance of his work to the point where another great composer from Russia was so impressed on hearing it that he made a version of the symphony for two pianos, in the other instance the composer, himself a prisoner of war, had to wait longer for his music to reach an international audience.
