Along with the string quartet, the concept of sonata for stringed instrument and piano is a product of the central European musical evolution par excellence. This is not to claim, of course, that sonatas for violin and continuo did not exist before, say, Telemann, or especially Haydn, for the products of the great Italian violin-making school of the late 17th and early 18th-centuries naturally demanded a repertoire to play.
