George Friedrich Handel (1685–1759) was one of the most famous composers of the Baroque period. Often compared with Bach, he was, like Bach, born in Germany and was educated in the spirit of German musical traditions. Unlike the cantor of Leipzig, however, he did not hail from a musical family. His father, a surgeon, was convinced that the law was the proper calling for his son and so Handel duly began law studies in his native town of Halle. Fortunately, he was soon introduced to Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, an organist from the Liebfrauenkirche. He was Handel’s first teacher of music and, as the composer later recalled, he owed a great deal to Zachow’s thorough knowledge and diligence.
