The twilight years of the Romanov dynasty in Tsarist Russia constitute one of the most fascinating periods in the history of the arts, literature and music. After the ‘golden age’ of Russian Romanticism, represented by such household names as Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Gogol and Turgenev, distinguished writers such as Anton Chekhov, Sergey Yesenin and Alexander Blok came to prominence, each of them contributing some innovative features to the literature of the time. Avant-garde painters proved an even more trail-blazing group, if only to mention such artists as Kandinsky, Chagall and Malevich, pursuing their careers alongside Ilya Repin and Vasilij Pierov. Russian composers played a no less prominent role in European culture at that time.
