In 1919, rejected by Polish critics, Alexander Tansman moved to Paris, where he met Ravel, who introduced him into Parisian society and the art community. In the 1920s, Tansman’s career gathered momentum – he gave concerts as a pianist-composer and his symphonic works were performed by the best orchestras under the baton of such conductors as Willem Mengelberg, Sergei Koussevitzky and Vladimir Golschmann. He wrote quickly and prolifically and published at some of the most prestigious publishing houses of the time.
