Büttner (1870-1943) was a man of great sincerity. He said what he thought about artist matters, about power and the misuse of power, and the authorities found this unforgivable. He could not rely on the support from any political lobby. He hated making a spectacle of himself, and unerringly went his own way as an composer, educator, music critic and champion of popular musical education.
