Precise realization of Beethoven’s tempo indications, i.e. the composer’s metronome markings – which have been so often questioned –, are for Bertrand de Billy an important precondition for his own interpretory style, not out of pedantry or false musicological ambition, but because this is the only way to maintain a work’s true formal and structural relationships. In the first movement of Beethoven’s third symphony, for example, a tempo that is too slow disturbs the structure of the entire movement, which has led to the arbitrary tradition of not repeating the exposition – a repetition which Beethoven demanded.
