During the 19th century England built a strong tradition of church music. Largely created from schools for choristers linked to every major Cathedral, the technical standard permitted the performance of quite elaborate settings of Psalms. The present disc provides a survey of music from this time, demonstrating the complexity of writing that was employed. At the same time the rhythmic pattern had to be easily understood for those churches that encouraged the congregation to share in the performance. This choral tradition has been retained, and has been influenced choirs and composers in English-speaking nations throughout the world.
