The string quartet is close to the heart of Norwegian classical music, this disc presenting a cross-section of works composed there during the 20th century. They come from four composers who embraced a very differing approach to their creativity.
Musical education outside of his homeland placed Fartain Valen at odds with nationalism that was sweeping through the country. It was an influence that was readily accepted by his former pupil, Klaus Egge.
Johan Kvandal passed through so many phases in a long career, that he resists being attached to any school of composition. Among present day composers, Alfred Janson has brought together tonality with a modernism that provides an easy accessibility to his music.
