The 1950s are generally regarded as the time when rock ‘n’ roll took the musical world by storm, yet it was also a period when many kinds of music were enjoying a surge in popularity. The world-wide launch of long playing records created a tremendous demand for new recordings, and albums by the top light orchestras sold in their millions. Early in the decade singles were still the biggest sellers, and it was not uncommon to see the occasional light music 78 (many were also now released on 7-inch 45 rpm) appearing in the top-twenty charts. Listening again to the bright, tuneful sounds gathered together in this collection, it is easy to understand why. |
