Next to Rachmaninov’s interesting variations on the theme of La Follia, which he erroneously believed to be Corelli’s, it’s really the flamboyant protagonist of transcriptions which is highlighted in this recording. Most of these pieces were performed in public during Rachmaninov’s American exile. The pianist here happily displays pure musicality, an ironclad technique and the languid Russian charm that befits this repertoire like snow goes with Pushkin: a moment of pure piano pleasure!
