Today's mixed reception of an output brought to a close in the late nineteenth century basically reflects the strange position given to Franck in the musical life of his own time, and later in musicography. It took a long time for musicology to take an interest in his desperately unromantic life, apparently devoid of anything that might explain romantic genius: turbulent love affairs, journeys of initiation, all-powerful virtuosity, sparkling conversation, superhuman ambitions, acute paranoia, nations to be championed, etc., etc.
