Robert Schumann was somewhat neglected by the German conductor and this adds more flavour to these rare recordings that posess a most intense and romantic vein. Furtwängler had a unique conducting technique: some videos show him making awkward, gawky movements like a medium in a trance. He did not have a strong beat because he wished that the sense of time be established by the players in themselves, as in chamber music. He perceived symphonic music as a creation of nature that could only be realised subjectively into sound.
