Royal Classics Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was the driving force and, largely, creator of the Impressionist movement in music. His original ideas of form and colouring served as inspiration for many later composers, and his influence survives to this day.
Jeux was composed in 1912. The famous ballet dancer Nijinsky was responsible both for scenario and choreography for this unusual work, which is an impression - not a description - of a game of tennis, its basic "rules" (an undulating theme) being subjected to multiple interpretations (variations).
Trois Nocturnes This work originated, it is believed, in a lost composition titled Three Twilight Scenes of 1892. Dissatisfied with it, Debussy experimented by transferring it to violin and orchestra, emphasising the more nocturnal elements of twilight and drawing as much effect as possible from a limited range of sounds, "Like a study in grey in painting", he said. By 1897 the Three Nocturnes had evolved from these experiments into what we hear today.
La Mer draws upon such experiments to evoke the different aspects and moods of another natural phenomenon: the Sea. It was written in 1903-5 and has been described rather loosely as "the most successful of all French symphonies". Yet it has litde to do with symphonic form (apart from being in three movements) but is much concerned with the "symphonic" development and metamorphosis of basic themes. The titles of the movements are an excellent indication of the way Debussy handled these musical ideas to suit the differing moods of the ever-changing sea. In "From dawn to noon at sea", daylight gradually illuminates the dark waters. As fight intensifies the sea itself becomes active, and eventually a brass chorale suggests its grandeur and power under the noonday sun. 'Play of the waves" examines the sea's surface movements in detail, and "Dialogue of wind and sea" suggests the interaction between the two mighty elements.
