The Perfect

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756-1791) Mozart composed the overture to his opera, Don Giovanni, in one night, on the eve of its first performance. At 14, in Rome, Mozart was able to transcribe a Miserere for nine voices in two choirs, faultlessly, after bearing it once. That ear, that monstrous memory, one might say, are an important aspect of the Mozart phenomenon. Mozart's music is all the more effective in that it is discreet even in its effusions: the andantes and adagios are organized around a single directing line. The rigour exists in those atmospheric tableaux that are his operatic overtures, those arias which, in a few bars, illuminate the entire character or the merely pleasant passages
