FIRST WORLD RECORDING OF CHROMATIC HARP The Pleyel chromatic harp, first produced in 1894, solved the problems of the classical harp vis-à-vis modern musical language. Taught for a while in Paris, it established itself more firmly in the Wagnerian Belgium of the early twentieth century. Francette Bartholomée, director of the harp classes at the Conservatory in Brussels, present an exceptional recital that is evidence of the interest held by three Belgian composers for these two instruments. It should contribute to the revival of the chromatic harp, a visual and aural delight which charmed Debussy, Enesco and Florent Schmitt, but which was unable to survive the circumstances of the 1930's. |
