Around 1724-26 George Frideric Handel wrote his six recoder sonatas, which are generally considered the finest in the Baroque repertory. Handel was at the height of his fame as an opera composer, writing such masterpieces as Giulio Cesare and preoccupied with the fortunes of his opera company, the Royal Academy of Music in London.
